Is cigarette smoke a problem at Disneyland?

Villains apparently aren’t the only ones fuming in the Halloween character area at Disneyland, according to two guests.

The cigarette smoke from a nearby smoking area reportedly is wafting over, making some guests and employees smolder.

Two guests told Around Disney that they made complaints at Disneyland City Hall about problems with cigarette smoke as they waited in line in the villain-character area near it’s a small world ride.

One of the guests, Robert Laird, editor of a Web site for annual passholders, told Around Disney that he has talked to about a dozen employees, as well as other guests, who have had similar problems.

But Suzi Brown, a Disneyland Resort spokeswoman, said Disneyland has received no complaints about the smoking issue in the character area, so officials have no plans to change anything.

“I really think this is an isolated instance,” Brown said.

Laird of Fullerton wrote a report about the issue in his dapsmagic.com Web site, which he started in 2004 and has about 8,000 members.

Tracy Balough of Laguna Hills, who is allergic to smoke, told Around Disney that she’s had to get out of line because of the smell. Balough said she filed a written report at City Hall, but did not keep a copy.

“There’s no way for me to stand in line because the smoke is too much. I start coughing. I’m highly allergic to it,” Balough said.

Laird said he overheard that one employee had an asthma attack. Brown said Disney works with employees to make sure they are placed appropriately depending on their health conditions, but did not comment specifically about the specific employee.

The villain greeting area, set up for Halloween Time, sits on an elevated area across a pond from the smoking area, which juts out on a cement patio over the water. When the wind blows, the smoke allegedly drifts over to the place where guests line up to meet employees dressed up like villains, including Cruella de Vil and Captain Hook.

Some guests and employees also smell the smoke at other times, including during parades and for long lines into the small world ride during the holidays, Laird and Balough said.

“If you are walking through, it’s not going to be an issue. But if you stand there, it will. Anyone with asthma or respiratory problems will have problems,” Laird said.

The smoking area was set up about a year and a half ago, while the character area has been used for longer, Brown said. The parks are smoke-free in most areas.

“In order to accommodate all of our guests, we have designated smoking areas. We always locate them in areas around the resort with the least amount of traffic,” Brown said.
