Cigarette Packs May Come With Deathbed Photos

Health Canada is considering ordering cigarette companies to put deathbed photos of an emaciated cancer victim on every package. Health Canada is testing 49 new health warnings for possible placement on cigarette packages.

Two of the new warnings feature photographs of Edmonton anti-smoking cigarettes activist Barb Tarbox, taken just before her death from cancer. Focus groups of smokers across Canada have rated this deathbed image as having the highest impact on them, saying it is far more clear and powerful than most anti-smoking cigarettes warnings.

Various warning messages are being studied to see how credible, relevant, readable and effective they are with smokers, said Christelle Legault, media relations officer for Health Canada.
