Lancashire Pubs Warned Over Under-18s Buying Cigarettes From Machines

A CRACKDOWN is being launched amid fears that underage smokers are buying from cigarette machines in pubs, social clubs and restaurants.
Shopkeepers who sell cigarettes online to under-18s have been a frequent target for investigators from Lancashire County Council’s trading standards department.
But now the owners of pubs, social clubs and restaurants which fail to police cigarette vending machines on their premises are in the firing line.

In what is thought to be a first in the UK, the county council’s consumer watchdog is mounting a series of prosecutions against retailers and cigarette vending firms, accusing them of failing to ensure purchasers are over 18.

Trading standards chiefs believe the issue has been "brushed under the carpet" for too long and they are hopeful the test cases will underpin their commitment to tackling illegal cigarette sales.

Lke similar inquiries into corner shops and general stores, underage volunteers will be used in sting operations to make test purchases from vending machines in pubs and clubs.

Gerry Smallshaw, trading standards manager, said that around half of all cigarette machines were located in corridors near toilets or other isolated alcoves.
He said: “This increases the potential for the vending machines to be abused by under-age smokers, as they are not directly in view of staff members.
"We have done a lot of enforcement work in East Lancashire in pubs and clubs, over the last 12 months, but the situation has not been improving quite as quickly as we have wanted it to."
